The London Transport Museum (LTM) in Covent Garden is set to undergo a dramatic 'once-in-a-generation' revamp to mark its 50th birthday in 2030. The upgrades, which will be significant but not disruptive, include a new entrance directly onto the Covent Garden Piazza and approximately 500 square metres of additional space for galleries and learning experiences. The museum will remain open during the works.
Record visitor numbers and expansion plans
Last year, the LTM welcomed a record 450,000 visitors. The museum has been delighting Londoners since 1980, appealing to both young audiences—with free tickets for children and a popular soft play area—and transport enthusiasts. It also runs tours of London's abandoned underground spaces. The revamp aims to increase visitor numbers by 20 percent.
Sustainability upgrades
In addition to the visible changes, the museum will implement major environmental upgrades, including low-carbon heating and other sustainability improvements. According to museum officials, the project represents a 'once-in-a-generation' opportunity to enhance the visitor experience while reducing the museum's environmental footprint.
Artist's impressions and future vision
Artist's impressions released by De Matos Ryan show a modern, welcoming entrance on the Piazza, blending the historic setting with contemporary design. The London Transport Museum is open daily, and the upgrades are expected to be completed in time for the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2030.
