Anthropic's Claude AI Can Now Operate Your Computer Like a Human Assistant
In a groundbreaking development that blurs the line between artificial intelligence and human operation, San Francisco-based Anthropic has unveiled a new capability for its Claude AI agent that allows it to take direct control of your computer. The feature, named Cowork, enables users to delegate desktop tasks to Claude through simple messaging from their phone, effectively turning the AI into a digital coworker.
How Claude's Computer Control Works
The Cowork function operates through a permission-based system where Claude gains access to various computer applications and tools. According to Anthropic's announcement on social media platform X, the AI can "open your apps, navigate your browser, fill in spreadsheets—anything you'd do sitting at your desk." The company demonstrated this capability in a video showing Claude accessing a user's photo library to find, crop, and watermark images of their shop.
Anthropic explained in a detailed blog post that Claude communicates task outcomes rather than displaying every step of the process. Users receive push notifications on their mobile devices when tasks are completed or when the AI requires additional authorization to proceed. The system creates an "ongoing" conversation across two screens, with all computational work occurring on the computer rather than the phone.
The Rise of Agentic AI Technology
This development represents the latest advancement in what Silicon Valley calls "agentic AI"—systems that can act autonomously rather than simply responding to prompts like traditional chatbots. While some agentic AI applications focus on practical tasks like booking flights or restaurant reservations, others are exploring social interactions, such as those demonstrated on platforms like Moltbook.
Mark McClain, CEO and founder of identity governance platform SailPoint, expressed cautious optimism about this evolving technology. "These agents aren't like the Terminator," McClain told reporters, "but bear in mind, these are systems which store and record every piece of data you feed them." He warned about the psychological temptation to treat AI agents as confidants, noting that unlike human friends, "agents could pass on your information in ways that aren't visible or within your control."
Security Concerns and Implementation Details
Anthropic has been transparent about potential risks associated with Claude's computer control capabilities. The company warns that the AI model might encounter "malicious content" during task execution, and that "a manipulated instruction, an unexpected command, or a phishing link opened in your browser could cascade into actions that are difficult or impossible to undo."
Microsoft's recent research, shared exclusively with media outlets, identifies what it calls "shadow AI agents" as a growing cybersecurity concern among business leaders. These unregulated software systems operate without clear transparency about how they handle user data.
Currently, Claude's Cowork feature is available as a research preview exclusively for macOS users, with Anthropic's Max tier subscribers gaining first access followed by Pro users. The capability is integrated into both Claude Cowork and Claude Code interfaces, representing a significant step toward more autonomous AI assistance in daily computing tasks.
