DVLA Highlights Cost-Saving Method for Driving Licence Renewals
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a crucial reminder to millions of motorists across Britain: renewing your driving licence online is the most economical option, potentially saving you £7.50 per application. With approximately 50 million driving licence holders in the country, this advice could translate into significant savings for households facing financial pressures.
The Price Discrepancy That Could Catch Drivers Unaware
Renewing a photocard driving licence through the official GOV.UK website costs £14. However, if you choose to visit a Post Office counter for the same service, the price increases to £21.50 – a £7.50 premium for identical renewal. Submitting an application by post carries a charge of £17, making it the middle-ground option in terms of cost.
The DVLA emphasized this point in a social media post, stating: "Due to renew your driving licence? Do it online at http://gov.uk/renewdrivinglicence." This straightforward guidance aims to prevent unnecessary expenses for drivers who might otherwise opt for more expensive renewal methods.
When Is Licence Renewal Required?
Drivers must renew their photocard licence every ten years. The DVLA confirms that licence holders will receive a reminder before their current licence expires. To renew online, you must be a resident of Great Britain (Northern Ireland has a different service) and not be disqualified from driving.
For those unable to use the online service, alternatives include applying at a Post Office or by post. However, these methods come with higher costs and longer processing times.
Who Cannot Renew Online or at Post Offices?
Several important exceptions could prevent drivers from using the online or Post Office renewal services. You cannot renew through these channels if your name or title has changed. In such cases, you must apply by post and include supporting identity documents.
Additional alternative procedures apply to:
- Drivers aged 70 or over
- Those renewing a 5-year bus or lorry licence
- Anyone with a short-term medical driving licence
Notably, there is no charge for drivers over 70 or those renewing a medical short-period licence.
Processing Times and Important Details
When applying digitally, your replacement licence should arrive within seven days. Applications submitted at a Post Office or through the postal system may take up to three weeks, with possible delays if medical or personal information requires verification.
Crucially, your replacement licence becomes valid from the date your application receives approval – not from when your existing licence expires. Motorists must also return their old photocard to the DVLA upon receiving the new one.
Payment Methods for Different Renewal Options
Digital renewals accept payment via MasterCard, Visa, Electron, or Delta debit or credit cards. Postal applications require a cheque or postal order payable to DVLA, sent to: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DH.
Drivers are permitted to continue operating vehicles while awaiting their replacement licence's arrival, provided they satisfy all standard legal requirements. This ensures minimal disruption during the renewal process.
