British engineering firm JCB and driver Andy Green have set a new world land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle, reaching 406.320mph in the JCB Hydromax. The record-breaking run took place on a Utah salt flat, marking a significant milestone in alternative fuel vehicle performance.
Record-Breaking Achievement
The attempt comes exactly 20 years after Green drove JCB's Dieselmax car to a FIA-certified diesel land speed record of 350.092mph. The new hydrogen record demonstrates the potential of hydrogen as a high-performance fuel, with the Hydromax achieving a speed over 56mph faster than its diesel predecessor.
Green, a Royal Air Force pilot and renowned land speed record holder, also holds the outright world land speed record of 763.035mph, which he achieved in 1997. That run made him the first and still only person to break the sound barrier on land, a feat that remains unmatched in the history of land speed racing.
