The discount supermarket giant Lidl has confirmed it will open three brand new stores in London over the next two months, marking a significant step in its ongoing expansion across the capital.
Locations and Launch Details
This week, Lidl announced a nationwide rollout of 19 new supermarkets across England, with three key London locations set to benefit. The new stores will be situated in Stamford Hill, on Walworth Road in Elephant and Castle, and on Sutton High Street.
While specific opening dates for the individual stores are yet to be finalised, the company has confirmed all three will welcome customers by some point in March 2026. To celebrate each launch, Lidl has promised free food samples and opportunities for shoppers to win special prizes.
A Broader Investment Push
This London expansion follows closely on the heels of Lidl opening its 1,000th store in Britain and embarking on a substantial £43 million programme to upgrade existing locations nationwide. These renovations, ongoing for around a year, have focused on improving customer experience through new till systems, expanded freezer space, and broader product ranges.
A Lidl spokesperson stated: ‘We’re starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve. With this push, we’re set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market.’
London's Competitive Grocery Landscape
Lidl is not the only budget chain aggressively growing its footprint in London. Its main rival, Aldi, opened three large new stores in the capital just before Christmas 2025. Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer has recently published a 'wish list' of 200 London locations it is targeting for new or revamped food halls, indicating a highly competitive market for grocery retailers in the city.
The confirmation of these three sites represents progress on Lidl's ambitious plans revealed in April 2025, when it identified over 200 London neighbourhoods as potential targets for new store openings.
