What the Carnaby Street Transformation Plans Involve
The proposed improvements aim to refresh the iconic street, which is home to contemporary brands like Rixo, Tala, and Pangaia. The key elements of the scheme focus on upgrading the visitor experience and celebrating the area's heritage.
The main proposals include installing new signage, upgrading the street lighting, and introducing more planting and greenery to the area. A central part of the plan is to take Carnaby Street back to its visual roots by making it look more like a traditional road again. While the street will remain pedestrianised, the developers propose reinstating a visual distinction between a 'road' and pavements.

This move is intended to undo many of the changes implemented in the 1980s and 1990s, when artificial stone paving was installed across the thoroughfare. The consultation website states: "We believe there is an opportunity to refresh Carnaby Street's public realm with high-quality, contextually appropriate materials that celebrate the street's heritage while improving comfort and accessibility."
The plans specify replacing the existing artificial stone with a refined mix of natural stone. Furthermore, there is a proposal to launch a new art and cultural programme for the street. This could see artistic works integrated into building façades, the paving itself, and key sightlines throughout the area.
