Asda Transfers Security to Mitie in Major Retail Crime Crackdown
Asda Security Overhaul: Mitie Partnership Announced

Asda Announces Major Security Overhaul Across UK Stores

Asda has unveiled a significant transformation of its security operations, transferring responsibility to facilities management specialist Mitie in a bid to combat escalating retail crime. The supermarket giant is implementing this strategic shift across more than 1,100 locations nationwide, encompassing superstores, supermarkets, living stores, and express outlets.

New Data-Driven Security Model

Under a newly secured multi-year contract, Mitie will help Asda transition to what the company describes as a data-driven, outcome-focused security model. This approach prioritises the safety of both customers and colleagues through innovative tactics and enhanced technological integration.

Key elements of the revamped security programme include:

  • Flexible guarding arrangements allowing security personnel to be dynamically deployed to sites requiring the greatest support
  • Introduction of store detectives implementing targeted anti-theft measures informed by sophisticated data analysis
  • Connection of all supermarket premises to a dedicated 24/7 central operations hub providing comprehensive remote surveillance capabilities
  • Rapid response units and dedicated teams for higher-risk locations

Addressing Rising Retail Crime

The security overhaul comes as Asda reports a sharp increase in retail crime incidents. Liz Evans, Asda's chief commercial officer for non-food and retail, revealed that more than 30,000 incidents of verbal abuse and physical assaults were recorded in stores last year alone.

"The safety of our colleagues and customers is our absolute priority," Evans stated. "We are taking decisive action to strengthen protection across our estate through this comprehensive partnership with Mitie."

More than 2,000 existing Asda security personnel are expected to transfer to Mitie under the agreement, which builds upon an existing partnership that has seen Mitie deliver security services across Asda's logistics network since July 2019.

Industry-Wide Security Developments

This development follows recent announcements from other major retailers implementing enhanced security measures. Sainsbury's reported that facial recognition technology trials at two stores resulted in a 46% reduction in recorded theft and anti-social behaviour, alongside a 92% decrease in repeat offenders returning to those locations.

Claire Pickthall, Sainsbury's retailer and digital director, described the impact as "seismic", with the technology now being expanded to additional London stores.

Police Call for Retailer Collaboration

The security enhancements come amid calls from law enforcement for greater retailer cooperation in combating shoplifting. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley acknowledged that retailers were justified in being dissatisfied with police efforts two years ago but noted that significant progress has since been made.

"They were right to say to us, 'please step up more'," Sir Mark told The Telegraph. "And we have done. They need to step up more. This is a team game."

The commissioner revealed that in London over the past year, police have "really doubled down" on shoplifting issues, making substantial progress while challenging the retail sector to improve their own security measures and collaboration efforts.

Asda's comprehensive security partnership with Mitie represents a significant investment in professional training and technology-enhanced protection, featuring SIA-licensed security guards, undercover detectives, and coordinated response capabilities supported by round-the-clock monitoring.
