The United Kingdom's cleanest beaches for swimming have been unveiled just in time for the summer season, as temperatures continue to soar across the nation. The mercury reached 34.8°C in London on Monday, marking the hottest May bank holiday on record. With half-term underway, families are heading to the coast, but not all beaches offer the same water quality.
New research from the Foundation for Environmental Education has identified the beaches with the cleanest waters through its annual Blue Flag Beach Awards. These awards recognize locations with excellent water quality, environmental management, safety standards, and lifeguard provisions. This year, 188 Blue Flag Awards have been granted across the UK, with 63 in England and nine in Northern Ireland.
Top Blue Flag Beaches in England
Several high-profile spots have made the list, including Hastings, Saltdean, Sandbanks, and Blackpool Sands. Hastings beach stretches along the town centre, from the fishing quarter and Old Town in the east, past amusement arcades and the pier, to the Marina and St Leonard-On-Sea. Regular cleaning efforts are organized by volunteers from Plastic Free Hastings, alongside routine maintenance by Hastings Council and a litter reporting service. Visitors on TripAdvisor have praised the beach, with @hallidayny describing it as a 'lovely wide beach to go running' with 'very inviting' water. @lady_britts noted it was 'lovely and clean,' offering activities for everyone, including crazy golf, trampolines, and restaurants.
Saltdean Beach
Saltdean Beach, just five miles from Brighton, is much quieter. At low tide, rock pools emerge, and numerous cafes line the picturesque chalk cliffs.
Sandbanks
In Dorset, Sandbanks is known for its upscale location, with some of the priciest property in the UK. According to Rightmove, average prices have sat at £1,019,569 over the last year, with detached homes fetching £1,695,909. The beach itself is famously clean, with glittering blue waters and immaculate sand. During high season, tractors sift through the sand daily, and a no-smoking policy helps keep the shores free of cigarette butts.
Minnis Bay
Minnis Bay in Kent is a quaint spot famous for its beach chalets and long expanse. The Minnis Bay Bar & Brasserie overlooks the coast, serving seafood favourites such as fish and chips, grilled tuna, and salmon linguine.
Walton-on-the-Naze
In Essex, Walton-on-the-Naze made the list, famed not only for its cleanliness but also for its abundant fossil-hunting opportunities.
Beaches to Avoid
For those wondering which beaches to avoid, recent research has revealed the UK's 'no-go' beaches, where swimming is not advised due to sewage and dump waste polluting the sea. These beaches have been classified as 'poor' for water quality, the lowest rating from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. There are 20 such beaches across the UK.
