Interior Designer Buys £450K Cornwall Villa in Cash Inspired by Rome Door Knocker
Cash Buyer: £450K Cornwall Villa Inspired by Rome Door Knocker

Interior designer Drew Muntz purchased Castle Lodge, a four-bedroom villa in Truro, Cornwall, for £450,000 in cash. The purchase was inspired by a brass door knocker he found in Rome, which he felt deserved a special home. Muntz, who also runs a dealership called One of One, bought the property four years ago and has since invested in its refurbishment.

Property Journey and Background

Muntz began his career working with banks, finding properties and operating a turnkey service for investors. He later launched a fashion brand, dressing celebrities like Beyoncé, before transitioning into interior design. His work now focuses on overseas families, relying on word-of-mouth referrals. He previously owned homes in Bloomsbury, Fitzrovia, and Dalston.

The Villa and Its Features

Castle Lodge is located in Truro's Georgian district, near the Wig & Pen pub and the Heron Inn. The villa was originally a bistro that had closed down. Muntz reconfigured the space, removing a large commercial kitchen and sourcing a Georgian front door. He financed the refurbishment with a £250,000 mortgage. The home features bronze uplights from the British Museum and a screen from the Dorchester Hotel.

Monthly Costs and Rental Income

The mortgage payment ranges from £1,300 to £1,400 per month. Including council tax and other bills, total monthly costs amount to £2,000. Muntz rents out Castle Lodge when he is traveling or working in London, generating approximately £40,000 in annual rental income. The mortgage was secured at a rate of around 2% on a five-year deal.

Future Plans

Castle Lodge is currently on the market for £795,000. Muntz plans to stay in Cornwall and is always on the lookout for new projects. He describes the garden as a challenge, requiring frequent maintenance to keep it from becoming overgrown. His favorite room is the kitchen, which features banquette seating and a large vintage table.
