Historic 1930s Lido Reopens in Essex Amid Heatwave
As temperatures soar across the UK, Britons have been seeking relief at beaches, pools, and ponds. In welcome news for swimmers in Essex, a historic lido has reopened just in time for the heatwave. Brightlingsea Lido, situated by the sea, originally opened in 1932 when a creek was converted into a tidal saltwater pool. This unheated lido closes during winter but officially opened its doors for the summer season on May 23, welcoming guests until August 31.
The lido is open daily from 7:30am to 7:15pm, offering plenty of time for a dip. Admission is affordable, with adult tickets priced at just £7.50, children over two for £5.50, and under-twos entering free. Visitors can also hire inflatables for £4.50 and sunbeds for £2.50. The facility is volunteer-run and features a 50m chlorine pool, making it a beloved local attraction. It was saved from closure in 2017 when the Brightlingsea Lido Trust took over management from the District Council.
As the last remaining lido in Essex, it also boasts a 15m heated paddling pool, ideal for families. Parents can enroll children in the Little Dippers Parent Preschool Water Confidence six-week course for £30. TripAdvisor reviewers have praised the lido, with one calling it a "little treasure" and noting, "It was a joy to discover; the locals are lucky to have this on their doorstep." Another reviewer, Amber, said, "Pool was much bigger than I expected so plenty of room for everyone. Was lovely to see so many families having such a lovely time… A lovely place on a hot day; we will definitely return."
Facilities at the lido include sunloungers, changing rooms, and a cafe offering a good array of reasonably priced food such as chips, burgers, cakes, and ice creams. However, some visitors have noted drawbacks, including a lack of lockers, long queues, and the cold temperature of the unheated pool. One customer commented, "The water was far too cold for our daughter who is still a baby. Absolute rip off; you’re better off just going in the sea; it’s much warmer."
For those seeking a different swimming experience, a rooftop infinity pool at the five-star art'otel in Battersea offers stunning 360-degree views of London, including the iconic Battersea Power Station. No membership is required for this spectacular spot.
