Wetherspoon's First European Pub Opens in Spain

In a landmark move for the beloved British pub chain, JD Wetherspoon has announced it will open its very first mainland European establishment, marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy.

A Taste of Britain in the Departure Lounge

The new venue, to be named Castell de Santa Bàrbera after the historic fortress overlooking Alicante, is strategically located within the international departures lounge of Spain's Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport. Scheduled to open its doors at the end of January 2026, the pub will operate from 6am until 9pm, seven days a week, with its kitchen closing one hour before the final call.

Patrons can expect a familiar Wetherspoon experience, with approximately 90% of the menu comprised of the chain's iconic British dishes. From full English breakfasts to burgers and pizzas, the core offerings will remain unchanged. However, in a nod to its Mediterranean location, the menu will also feature local staples such as garlic prawns and Spanish omelettes.

Design and Ambience for the Costa Blanca

While the food and drink will feel reassuringly British, the pub's design will see a notable departure from tradition. Instead of the chain's famous patterned carpets, the 1,000 sq ft venue will be fitted with tasteful terracotta and blue tiling. This single-level pub is more compact than the company's largest sites but boasts an outdoor terrace, perfect for travellers enjoying a final pint in the Spanish sun before their flight home.

The drinks selection will also strike a balance between home comforts and local flavour. Beloved draught beers like Guinness and Stella Artois will be available alongside a curated range of local Spanish beers, ensuring there's something for every palate.

A Strategic Launch for a Global Future

This inaugural European pub is not an isolated venture but a calculated first step in Wetherspoon's international ambitions. The location is a strategic masterstroke, given that a massive 2.6 million British nationals visited the Costa Blanca last year, with direct flights from the UK provided by airlines including EasyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, and British Airways.

Founder and Chairman Tim Martin has previously expressed interest in expanding into popular holiday destinations like Benidorm and Majorca. He confirmed this wider vision, stating, 'We are very much looking forward to opening our first overseas pub. We believe it will be popular with people travelling home from Alicante Airport. We aim to open a number of pubs overseas in the coming months and years, including those at airports.'

This move signals the beginning of a potential worldwide expansion for the brand, bringing its unique formula of affordable food and drink to international audiences, starting with the millions of Brits who pass through Alicante each year.
