Travelodge has implemented significant changes to its door key policy following a distressing incident where staff provided a sex attacker with access to a woman's hotel room. The hotel chain has issued a formal apology after Kyran Smith, who was sentenced to over seven years in prison, deceived employees into handing him the access card of his victim, leading to a sexual assault as she slept.
Details of the Assault and Legal Proceedings
In December 2022, Kyran Smith, a 29-year-old from Staines, attended a party with the victim before both stayed at a Travelodge in Maidenhead, Berkshire. According to Thames Valley Police, after the victim retired to her room around 2 a.m., Smith went to the reception and, through deception, obtained her room key. The victim awoke to find Smith sexually assaulting her in her bed, prompting her to shout at him to leave. Smith then returned the key to reception and went to his own room.
Court Verdict and Sentencing
At Reading Crown Court in January, Smith was found guilty of trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and sexual assault. He was subsequently jailed for seven-and-a-half years, highlighting the severe consequences of the security breach.
Travelodge's Response and Policy Changes
Jo Boydell, the chief executive of Travelodge, expressed deep sorrow for the significant distress caused to the victim. In a statement, Boydell apologized and offered to meet with the victim to discuss improvements. The company has taken immediate action by revising its room access security policy.
Key Policy Updates:
- Additional or replacement room keys are now only issued with explicit permission from the registered guest(s).
- This updated policy has been rolled out across all Travelodge hotels.
- Training has been provided to 12,000 customer-facing colleagues to reinforce these measures.
Independent Review and Government Engagement
Travelodge has commissioned an independent review of its room security measures to ensure further enhancements. Boydell also met with MPs and Jess Phillips, the minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls, to address concerns and outline steps being taken to improve hotel security.
Broader Implications for Hotel Safety
This incident underscores critical issues in hotel security protocols, particularly regarding key access and staff training. Travelodge's proactive measures aim to prevent similar occurrences and restore customer trust. The company's engagement with government officials reflects a commitment to addressing safety concerns in the hospitality industry.
As Travelodge continues to strengthen its security framework, this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of robust safety measures in protecting guests from potential threats.
