Tragedy at Sea: The Death of Anna Kepner

A family holiday cruise turned to tragedy when 18-year-old Anna Kepner was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship on 8 November 2023. The high school senior from Titusville, Florida, was discovered beneath a bed in her stateroom, wrapped in a blanket and concealed beneath life vests.

Investigators later revealed to ABC News that the cause of death was asphyxiation resulting from a bar hold - an arm across the neck - with visible bruising on the side of her neck. The Miami-Dade medical examiner's office continues to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding her death.

Family's Double Tragedy

The case took a devastating turn when authorities informed Anna's grandparents that her 16-year-old stepbrother has emerged as a suspect in the investigation. Barbara and Jeffrey Kepner expressed their heartbreak, fearing they've effectively lost two grandchildren.

"No matter what we find out, no matter what they tell us, it's not going to bring either one of these children back," Barbara Kepner told ABC News during an emotional interview on Monday.

The FBI has remained tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation, confirming only that they're examining Anna's "sudden death" without commenting on potential arrests.

Blended Family's Nightmare

The cruise was intended to launch a new tradition for the Kepner's blended family, bringing together three generations across three staterooms aboard the massive 133,596-ton vessel that can accommodate nearly 4,000 passengers.

Jeffrey Kepner emphasised their family dynamic, stating: "It's all family - it's a blended family, yes, but that's not how our family is. Our dynamic is we're all just family."

Further complicating the tragedy, Anna's stepmother Shauntel Hudson requested a delay in divorce custody proceedings, citing that one of her minor children might face criminal charges - an apparent reference to the 16-year-old stepbrother.

Anna's ex-boyfriend, Jim Thew, expressed little surprise about the stepbrother's potential involvement, telling WESH: "There were signs before this. She complained about ... being uncomfortable around him."

Unanswered Questions

Initial reports indicated no evidence of sexual assault, and preliminary findings suggested no drugs or alcohol in Anna's system, though official autopsy and toxicology reports remain pending.

The 16-year-old stepbrother was reportedly hospitalised for psychiatric observation following Anna's death and questioned by law enforcement. Barbara Kepner described him as "an emotional mess" who claimed he couldn't remember what happened.

"I believe, to him, that is his truth," she said, adding that Anna and her stepbrother had been "just like brother and sister" and "two peas in a pod."

While knowing how Anna died has provided some small comfort to her grieving grandparents, Barbara Kepner acknowledged the harsh reality: "But it's not going to bring Anna back."
