A rickshaw driver who embarked on an extraordinary stealing spree targeting some of London's most exclusive restaurants has been spared immediate prison time, despite making off with luxury wines and champagnes valued at over £31,000.
Mohammed Zaman, 31, was described by prosecutors as operating with "significant planning and sophistication" during his criminal campaign between December 2022 and May 2023. The thefts targeted prestigious establishments including Bob Bob Ricard in Soho, known for its 'Press for Champagne' buttons, and multiple branches of the Ivy chain.
The Modus Operandi
Zaman's method was both brazen and systematic. Prosecutors revealed how he would:
- Enter restaurants during busy lunch and dinner services
 - Target expensive bottles from wine fridges and display areas
 - Conceal bottles in a large bag he carried specifically for the purpose
 - Make swift exits before staff could notice the thefts

Among the stolen vintages were premium bottles of Louis Roederer Cristal champagne and Dom Pérignon, with individual bottles valued at hundreds of pounds each.
The Downfall
The sophisticated operation began to unravel when restaurant staff noticed a pattern in the thefts and reviewed CCTV footage. Zaman was eventually identified and arrested in May 2023 after being caught red-handed at the Ivy Asia in the City.
Police investigations revealed the true scale of his activities, connecting him to multiple high-value thefts across central London's dining scene.
Court Sentencing
At Southwark Crown Court, Zaman admitted to five counts of theft. In a surprising turn, Judge Gregory Perrins handed down a two-year prison sentence suspended for two years, citing the defendant's personal circumstances and previous good character.
The judge acknowledged the "audacious" nature of the crimes but noted that immediate imprisonment would have "grave consequences" for Zaman's family situation.
As part of his sentence, Zaman must complete 200 hours of unpaid work and participate in rehabilitation activities. The court also imposed a restraining order preventing him from entering any Ivy Collection restaurant for three years.
Industry Impact
The case has highlighted the vulnerability of high-end restaurants to targeted theft, particularly during busy periods when staff attention is divided. Restaurant managers have since reviewed security protocols to prevent similar incidents.
While Zaman avoided immediate custody, his sentence serves as a warning that sophisticated theft operations targeting the hospitality industry will be met with serious legal consequences.
