Nude Cruise's Strict Rule for Men: No Erections Allowed on Deck
Nude cruise's one strict rule that applies only to men

The concept of a holiday often involves letting your hair down, but a growing number of British travellers are taking this literally by embarking on nude cruises. These 'nakations at sea' are experiencing a significant boom, with passengers choosing to leave their inhibitions - and their clothes - at home.

Beyond the Stereotypes: The Reality of Nude Cruises

Contrary to what one might imagine, these voyages are not the sweaty, sexual free-for-alls some might picture. Travel company Bare Necessities has been orchestrating week-long clothing-optional cruises to destinations like the Caribbean since 1991. The organiser, Kat Whitmire, has revealed a crucial rule that applies specifically to men: erections are strictly prohibited in public areas and are only permitted within the privacy of one's own cabin.

"Men can't be overly excited. We say that if they start to feel things moving down there, jump in cold water, or think about baseball," Kat explained to Business Insider. This rule underscores the fundamental principle of these cruises: from departure to dock, the naturist experience is intended to be completely non-sexual.

Clothing, Towels, and Conduct: The Rulebook Explained

Despite the 'nude' label, participation is not mandatory. Bare Necessities welcomes newcomers, and the atmosphere is described as casual and accepting. While many passengers do go clothes-free for sunbathing and swimming, you won't be removed for choosing to cover up. The company's website notes that most passengers find themselves feeling more relaxed without the 'barrier of clothing'.

However, there are specific situations where clothing is required. Passengers must be dressed in the formal dining room, a rule in place largely because waitstaff carry hot food. Kat summarises this dress code as: "No nips, no bits, and no butts." Bathrobes, mesh, see-through garments, and string outfits are not permitted. Clothing is also mandatory when the ship is docked in port or beside other vessels.

One item you don't need to pack is a towel, but not for the reason you might think. Cruise operators provide towels and require passengers to always sit on one when naked, whether on a sun lounger, bar stool, or at the buffet. This forms an unofficial naturist dress code throughout the ship for hygiene reasons.

Body Positivity, Not Promiscuity

A common misconception is that these cruises are a hotbed for sexual activity. This is firmly not the case. Naturist cruises are distinctly different from swinger or 'Lifestyle' cruises that permit sexual exploration. On a Bare Necessities voyage, sexual behaviour in public is strictly prohibited and can result in being removed from the ship. The company also bans lingerie, fetish-wear, and 'excessive' genital jewellery.

The staff, including bartenders, cleaners, and the Captain, remain fully clothed at all times, ensuring it is never a completely nude environment. When it comes to activities, all the classic cruise offerings—from dance classes and karaoke to pool games and excursions—still take place, just often without the clothes.

The overarching goal, as defined by the organisers, is body positivity and personal freedom, creating a space where people can socialise and enjoy a holiday in a uniquely liberating, yet strictly regulated, environment.
