Lipsi, also known as Leipsoi, is a small Greek island in the Dodecanese group that has gained international recognition for its pristine coastline and pioneering sustainability efforts. With 23 secluded beaches free from rows of sunbeds, the island has deliberately avoided overtourism by prioritizing environmental protection over large-scale tourism.
Location and climate
Tucked between Samos and Leros, Lipsi is part of the Dodecanese islands, which include popular destinations like Kos and Rhodes. The region boasts more than 300 days of sunshine per year, making it the sunniest spot in Greece. The island has around 800 permanent residents and is only about 5 miles long.
Beaches and activities
Lipsi offers hidden coves, quiet beaches, traditional tavernas, and a slower pace of life. Popular beaches include Platis Gialos Beach, known for its sparkling blue waters and sweeping views of rolling hills; Hohlakoura Beach, ideal for snorkeling; and White Islands Beach, with pale jagged rocks enhancing the dazzling blue Aegean. The surrounding islets, such as beautiful Aspronisia, can be explored by boat, kayak, or organized tour. The Rena 5 Island Cruise takes visitors to five islets—Makronisi, Aspronisi, Marathi, Tiganakia, and Arki—in a full-day trip from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm.
Cultural and religious sites
The island is home to several churches, including Panagia tou Harou (Madonna of Death), a white-and-blue-washed church dating back to 1600, built by monks from Mount Athos. Each year on August 22, a procession marks the anniversary of a miracle: lilies placed by a young girl in 1943 bloom every year without fail. The Monastery of St John the Theologian, adorned with religious artefacts, is described as peaceful and restful by visitors.
Local cuisine and products
Lipsi is famous for local products such as cheese, honey, and wine—mostly sweet red wine due to the historic Italian occupation of the Dodecanese. At restaurant Pefko, visitors can sample seafood dishes including octopus salad, mussels and cheese in tomato sauce, and prawns with peppers, along with plenty of feta.
Getting there
Lipsi has no airport, so the journey requires planning. From London, travelers fly to Athens International. Direct easyJet routes from Gatwick to Athens are available from August 30 to September 6 for £137 per person. Wizz Air offers flights from Luton from September 27 to October 4 for £98 return. From Athens, a ferry from Piraeus port takes about 8 hours and 30 minutes. Blue Star Ferries runs the route with around two journeys per week, starting at £43. A week-long stay is recommended.
Best time to visit
Summer offers maximum sun: August averages 25.5°C, June 23°C, and July 24.8°C. Lipsi also provides light winter sun, with November averaging 17.8°C, January 13.1°C, and February 13.2°C.
