Nestled at the intersection of Isabella and Mehetabel Road in Hackney lies The Chesham Arms, a pub that stands as the true heart of its community. This 160-year-old backstreet local remains a hidden gem, cherished by residents for its deep-rooted connections and vibrant spirit.
A Community Hub with a Rich History
The Chesham Arms has long been a symbol of what makes a great neighborhood. Serving as a meeting spot for families, workers, and friends, it embodies the staple of British pub culture. In areas like Hackney, which boasts many pubs, this one is often cited among the best by enthusiasts, including those who have visited over 200 pubs across London.
With a strong community spirit at its core, the pub features regulars who actively campaign for its survival and staff members who literally grew up within its walls before returning to work there. This dynamic makes it the beating heart of a small part of Homerton, often described as feeling like a mini-village.
Peter McCall's Perspective
Peter McCall, 38, has been the General Manager at The Chesham Arms for four years. With two decades of experience in hospitality, he considers this pub one of the finest he has been part of, albeit with a hint of bias. He shared with MyLondon: "It's a great pub. Great locals, and that really helps when you're running a pub, when your locals are a good group of people."
He highlighted a unique tradition: "A lot of the kids who have grown up on the street have worked here or work here at the moment. It's almost like a rite of passage that when they turn 18, they come and work here. In a way, I think a local business should be able to offer some jobs to the local people."
Reflecting on the area, Peter added: "A lot of the locals have been living here for decades. Around here, it almost feels like a village. The pub feels like a village pub; it's the centre of the community. It is also like a place people stumble upon because it is slightly hidden, which is quite nice; that's part of the charm."
Survival Against the Odds
The pub's history is marked by resilience. In 2012, it was purchased by a property developer and closed, with plans to convert it into flats. However, a high-profile campaign by locals in 2013 prompted Hackney Council to designate the pub as an Asset of Community Value (ACV). By 2015, Article 4 directions were issued, preventing any change of use without planning permission.
Now, a decade later, The Chesham Arms is stronger than ever. It regularly welcomes teachers after a long day at school and staff from Homerton Hospital, maintaining an open-door policy for all. The pub does not accept bookings except in special circumstances, ensuring there is always space for walk-in visitors.
Charm and Hospitality
The allure of The Chesham Arms extends beyond its community role. Its traditional decor, expansive beer garden at the back, and an authentic brick fireplace inside create a warm and cosy atmosphere that alone is worth the visit. Coupled with excellent hospitality from the staff, it has been described by many as a "phenomenal pub."
Peter emphasized the welcoming nature: "The street is surprisingly quiet compared to the surrounding area. Loads of people walk along the side streets, but not many people turn down these roads. We don't take bookings or reservations because we don't want people to come in, see half the pub is reserved, and then they walk out. We don't want to make the pub unavailable to anybody. We are welcoming to anybody who comes in."
He concluded with personal affection: "Even on my days off, this is the pub I'd want to come and drink in. Working here, not many jobs give you the opportunity to connect with everyone around. I think I'll be here for a long time."
The Chesham Arms is located at 15 Mehetabel Rd, London E9 6DU, continuing to serve as a beloved landmark where local children grow up to work, preserving its legacy as a cornerstone of Hackney's community life.
