Gozo Named Top Trending Holiday Destination for 2026 After 1,900% Search Surge
Gozo is the top trending holiday destination for 2026

The serene island of Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago, has been catapulted into the spotlight as the number one trending holiday destination for 2026, according to data from TravelSupermarket.

The platform recorded an astonishing 1,900% surge in search interest for the destination, transforming it from what was often an 'afterthought' into a 'must-visit' location for British travellers seeking an alternative to busier European hotspots.

Why is Gozo Suddenly So Popular?

Chris Webber, head of holidays and deals at TravelSupermarket, attributes the spike in curiosity to Malta's record-breaking tourism in 2024, which saw 3.56 million visitors. This influx has led many to discover its quieter neighbour just a short ferry ride away.

Often described as 'what Malta used to be like', Gozo offers a slower, more laid-back pace. Spanning just 26 square miles, the island is a treasure trove of ancient history and natural beauty, boasting more than 300 days of sunshine annually.

Its history stretches back an incredible 7,000 years, home to the Ggantija Temples – UNESCO-listed structures older than the Egyptian pyramids. The island is also steeped in myth, reputedly the place where the nymph Calypso detained Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey.

What to See and Do on the Island

For history enthusiasts, the island's capital, Victoria (Rabat), is dominated by the historic Citadel, a medieval fortress offering panoramic views. Reviewers on TripAdvisor praise it as a 'beautiful place full of history' with 'spectacular views across the island'.

Nature lovers are drawn to its rugged coastline and clear waters. The rust-coloured sands of Ramla Bay provide the island's most popular beach, while the north coast features ancient, 350-year-old Salt Pans. Although the famous Azure Window limestone arch collapsed in 2017, its remains at the Blue Hole have created a renowned diving site.

As Lonely Planet notes, 'While Malta can sometimes feel busy and crowded, sleepy and laid-back Gozo offers the perfect opportunity to breathe out and relax.'
