Navigating a European city's transport network for the first time can be challenging. Manual doors on some of Paris's oldest Metro lines and the lack of tap-in options in Budapest or Rome are common hurdles. Instead, travelers may prefer a walkable city where sights are easily accessible on foot. A new study by TimeOut has identified the most walkable cities in Europe for 2026, with Edinburgh, described as 'stunning' by locals, taking the top spot.
Edinburgh Leads the Way
TimeOut surveyed 24,000 city-dwellers across Europe, asking them to rate their city's walkability as 'good' or 'amazing.' Edinburgh received an impressive 93% approval, securing first place. The city boasts a sprawling bus and tram network with contactless payment, but many main tourist attractions are within close walking distance. The Royal Mile, a mile-long stretch from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, includes St Giles' Cathedral and the Scottish Parliament. Nearby, Arthur's Seat offers a rewarding hike with coastal views.
