British Pensioner, 73, Brutally Assaulted and Robbed in Tenerife Apartment
A 73-year-old British woman was subjected to a horrific attack in her apartment in Tenerife, where she was beaten, raped, and robbed. The assault occurred in May 2018 in the resort town of Arona, located in the Canary Islands. The attacker, a 32-year-old man, forcibly entered her home by climbing over a six-foot-high wall before launching the violent incident.
Details of the Assault and Aftermath
The brutal assault lasted for approximately two hours, during which the victim was threatened and had her money, jewellery, and keys stolen. Following the attack, she was rushed to a hospital in Santa Cruz for medical treatment. Tragically, the victim passed away seven months later in January 2019, with her daughter testifying that her health significantly deteriorated after the assault.
It took authorities two months to locate and arrest the attacker. The case has only recently come to public attention as the perpetrator was sentenced to nine years in prison. DNA analysis and CCTV footage were crucial in proving his presence at the scene, leading to his conviction.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
During the trial, the court heard that the victim frequently spent extended periods in Tenerife to escape the harsh weather in the United Kingdom. The attacker denied any involvement in the crime, claiming he was working on the island at the time and had nothing to do with the assault.
He further delayed the legal proceedings by failing to appear in court, alleging that he had lost his passport and could not travel. Ultimately, he was ordered to pay £30,000 in compensation to the victim's family and return the stolen jewellery.
This case highlights the severe impact of violent crimes on victims and their families, with justice being served years after the initial incident. The sentencing brings a measure of closure, though the loss remains profound for those affected.
