An Australian citizen is confirmed to be among the 115 people injured in a catastrophic fire that ripped through a popular bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve, claiming the lives of 40 people.
Consular Support Mobilised for Injured Australian
Australia's Climate Change and Energy Minister, Chris Bowen, confirmed the news on Friday morning, stating the individual was receiving medical care and consular assistance. "It's clearly a terrible, terrible tragedy and I'm sure all Australians send their condolences to the people of Switzerland, the people involved," Bowen told ABC RN radio.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Dfat) is providing support to the injured person and their family. A Dfat spokesperson stated, "Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment." The department is also making urgent inquiries to determine if any other Australians were affected by the incident.
Sudden Inferno at Le Constellation Bar
According to Swiss police, the blaze began at around 1.30am local time on New Year's Day at Le Constellation bar, a venue popular with tourists in the centre of the Valais resort. Video footage from the scene showed orange flames erupting from the ground-floor establishment, with screams audible amidst loud music.
The fire is not believed to be a criminal act. Police have indicated that arson was not responsible and the likely cause was an accident. The severity of the incident has made identifying some of the victims extremely difficult due to the burns they sustained.
Emergency Contact and Aftermath
Australians concerned about family members potentially caught in the fire are advised to contact the 24/7 consular emergency support line on 1300 555 135.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over the renowned ski resort, with the local community and international visitors mourning the significant loss of life. The provision of consular assistance can include:
- Communication with local hospitals and authorities.
- Provision of lists of local medical providers.
- Assistance in contacting family members.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the injured and the families of the victims of this horrific start to the new year.
