A new British Airways year-round service from London Heathrow to Guernsey has made the Channel Island accessible in just 35 minutes. Dubbed the sunshine island, Guernsey offers a milder climate than mainland Britain, thanks to its proximity to the Mexican Gulf Stream. The author and her mother joined the maiden flight, greeted by applause and Guernsey flags as they ascended. Upon landing in St Peter Port, they began their exploration of this six-mile-long bailiwick, located 30 miles from the Normandy coast.
Historic Attractions and Scenic Views
The Duke Hotel, a four-star base, provided comfortable accommodation, though cheaper options are available. St Peter Port offers easy access to stunning vistas and cultural treasures. Castle Cornet, an 800-year-old fortification at the harbor entrance, is a must-see for history enthusiasts. The castle houses four museums and historic gardens, though its tea rooms feel dated. Nonetheless, the panoramic views across the Channel compensate for the lack of contemporary dining.
Nearby, the Guernsey Museum at Candie features educational exhibits and taxidermy. Don't miss Victoria Tower, where Victor Hugo allegedly met his mistress. Request the key from museum reception for exclusive 30-minute access. The 99-step climb is rewarding but exhausting, making a swim at the Valette bathing pools a perfect next stop. Built in Queen Victoria's reign, these four pools fill with seawater at high tide, offering year-round swimming. The early April water temperature was tolerable for keen sea swimmers, but others should visit in July or August.
Unexpected Culinary Delights
The island's dining scene surprised the author. At Dhaka restaurant, a Bangladeshi banquet included Murgi Rezala (roast chicken curry) and vegan vegetable Niramish, accompanied by samosa, rice, and naan. The dishes were aromatic and flavorful. For a splurge, Fukku, a Michelin-guide-listed Japanese restaurant, serves traditional cuisine with a modern twist. Highlights include edamame beans in hot sauce, coal-cooked beef and chicken skewers, and matcha tiramisu. The cocktail menu is also impressive.
The brief Guernsey escape ended reluctantly. The island blends historic charm with contemporary flair, offering a unique getaway. Flights from London Heathrow start at £50 daily. Learn more at britishairways.com and visitguernsey.com.
