Which? Urges UK Holidaymakers Not to Cancel Summer 2026 Bookings
Which? Warns Against Cancelling Summer 2026 Holidays

Consumer watchdog Which? has urged UK holidaymakers not to cancel their summer 2026 travel plans prematurely, warning that doing so could leave them out of pocket. Despite predictions of widespread disruption due to a jet fuel crisis and airspace closures in the Middle East, experts advise holding off on pre-emptive cancellations.

Why Cancelling Early Is a Mistake

According to Which? travel expert Kate Pasola, cancelling a booking before the airline does is a major mistake. “You may give up your right to claim a refund, compensation, or support that could otherwise be available under EC261 rules,” she explains. Instead, she advises travellers to wait for the airline to cancel the flight and then request a refund. The same applies to accommodation: “Don’t cancel. Get in touch with the host or hotel via the booking platform’s chat function or give them a call.” Providers may offer alternatives or free cancellation, whereas cancelling on your own could incur penalties.

Current Travel Disruption Context

Since conflict began in February, airlines have dropped routes, trimmed schedules, and added surcharges to offset rising operating costs. The International Energy Agency has warned that Europe has “maybe six weeks or so of jet fuel left,” with cancellations expected from May onwards.

Your Rights Under EC261

Under EC261 rules, UK passengers are entitled to assistance or a refund if the airline cancels the flight. However, if you cancel first, you lose these protections. For accommodation, refund policies depend on the provider, but direct communication may secure more flexibility.

What to Do If Your Flight Is Cancelled

Chris Harrington, managing director of travel firm hoppa, advises contacting the airline immediately. “If you are at the airport, head to the customer service desk. Acting quickly is essential as alternative seats may be limited.” If queues are long, use the airline’s app or call customer service. Airlines are generally required to rebook you on a later flight or alternative route. Harrington also stresses the importance of buying travel insurance as soon as you book to cover costs like hotels, transfers, and food. However, compensation is unlikely if cancellations are due to extraordinary circumstances like fuel shortages.

Key Takeaways for Summer 2026 Travellers

  • Do not cancel your booking – wait for the airline or provider to act first.
  • Contact providers directly to explore flexible options.
  • Purchase travel insurance at the time of booking.
  • In case of cancellation, act quickly to secure alternative arrangements.

Which? emphasises that staying calm and waiting for official confirmation can save holidaymakers money and protect their rights.
