A dubious story circulating online claims that a Chinese student won $100,000 by betting on weather using an AI system. The tale, which has the hallmarks of an urban legend, suggests the student exploited discrepancies between aviation weather reports and betting platforms.
The Alleged Scheme
According to the story, the student utilized Metar (Meteorological Aerodrome Reports), which are updated hourly and used in the aviation industry. Unlike standard public forecasts that refresh every few hours, Metar data provides near-real-time weather conditions. The student supposedly ran an AI-based system on two PCs in his dormitory, downloading Metar data and scanning weather-betting sites like Polymarket. By identifying mismatches between the actual weather data and the odds offered, he placed successful bets and quickly accumulated over $100,000 (about £73,500).
Why Experts Are Skeptical
However, the story is highly questionable. Weather betting is a niche market, making it unlikely that a student could find enough takers for his bets to amass such a sum. The lack of specific identifying details—such as the student's name, university, or any verifiable evidence—is a classic sign of an urban legend. The tale appears to be more of a theoretical concept than a real event, highlighting what could be possible rather than what actually happened.
