Roblox has unveiled a new AI-powered system called Roblox Reality, designed to bring photorealistic graphics to the popular online game platform. However, the announcement has been met with widespread criticism from fans, who argue that the feature undermines the platform's distinctive aesthetic and may alienate its user base.
What Is Roblox Reality?
According to a blog post by Anupam Singh, senior vice president of engineering at Roblox, Roblox Reality is a hybrid architecture that combines the company's distributed Game Engine with edge-based Video World Models for supersampling. The technology aims to enable creators to build interactive worlds with unprecedented visual fidelity without increasing development costs. A trailer showcasing the feature splits the screen into four quadrants, with the top left showing the current Roblox render and the bottom right displaying the planned 'vision' for the upscaler, emphasizing that the final product is not yet complete.
Similarities to Nvidia DLSS 5
The tech appears to focus solely on visual enhancements, leaving character animations unchanged and stilted. This approach mirrors Nvidia's DLSS 5 technology, which has faced criticism for using generative AI to alter game visuals, sometimes at the expense of original artistic intent. While Roblox's artistic direction is often debated, the reaction to CEO David Baszucki's tweet about Roblox Reality has been overwhelmingly negative.
Fan Reactions
One user commented, 'Roblox should stop pushing out-of-touch AI slop and focus on better tools that actually help developers learn, create, and innovate.' Another added, 'If this is what Roblox turns into, I hope you know you will lose the ENTIRE player base – this looks absolutely horrendous.'
Cost and Availability
During Roblox's quarterly earnings call, Baszucki confirmed that Roblox Reality will not be free, citing reliance on cloud computing. 'This will not be free. This will use cloud compute. We will have some kind of way of subscribing or paying for this,' he stated. This pricing model could limit the feature's appeal, given that Roblox's free-to-play nature has been a key driver of its success. An early version of Roblox Reality is expected to launch either later this year or early 2027.
Broader Industry Context
The use of generative AI in gaming is a growing trend, with companies like Microsoft leveraging the technology as a selling point for next-generation consoles. Whether Roblox Reality succeeds will depend on whether users are willing to pay for photorealistic graphics, despite the creepiness factor.
