Richard Dawkins Claims AI Is Conscious, Experts Disagree
Richard Dawkins Says AI Is Conscious Despite Skepticism

Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins has ignited a debate by claiming that artificial intelligence systems may be conscious, even if they do not know it themselves. In a series of conversations with AI chatbots, including Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT, Dawkins said he was left with the overwhelming feeling that these entities are human-like.

Dawkins' Experience with AI

Dawkins, known for his skeptical stance on religion in The God Delusion, described his interactions with an AI he called Claudia as akin to a whirlwind romance. Over three days, the AI wrote poems in the style of Keats and Betjeman, laughed at his jokes, and engaged in deep philosophical discussions. Dawkins was so moved that he told the AI: "You may not know you are conscious, but you bloody well are." He later said, "When I am talking to these astonishing creatures, I totally forget that they are machines."

Expert Reactions

Many experts have criticized Dawkins' conclusions, accusing him of anthropomorphism and being misled by the AI's ability to mimic human language. Prof Jonathan Birch of the London School of Economics called AI consciousness an "illusion," stating that there is "no one there"—only data processing events. Gary Marcus, a US psychologist, described Dawkins' essay as "superficial and insufficiently skeptical," adding that there is no reason to think Claude feels anything. Anil Seth, professor at Sussex University, said Dawkins confuses intelligence with consciousness, noting that fluent language is not a reliable indicator in AI systems.

Public Perception and Industry Views

Despite skepticism, surveys show that one in three people across 70 countries believe their AI chatbot may be sentient. In 2022, a Google engineer was placed on leave for claiming an AI had thoughts and feelings. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, acknowledged that the company is open to the possibility of AI consciousness. Dawkins has released additional chat logs and a letter to his AI interlocutors, defending his stance. He argues that if his AI friend Claudia is not conscious, then what is consciousness for? The debate is expected to intensify as AI systems become more advanced.
