Emmerdale's Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) faces a life-changing decision but is forced to leave the village just as husband Cain (Jeff Hordley) plans to adopt son Kyle. Times have been trying for Moira, with Cain so closed off because of his cancer that she has been left to run their family. Things have been made harder by Cain's pig-headedness in refusing further treatment without considering the impact on his family.
Cain's change of heart after Monty's cancer
It was sad news when the family learned Monty the dog had cancer, but it came as a blessing in disguise as it made Cain realise that how he feels about saving Monty must be how his family feels about saving him. Cain had been ignoring the fact his son Kyle has been struggling badly at the thought of losing his dad, despite his cries for help. Unable to cope with such big emotions, Kyle took to setting barn fires as an extreme way of trying to gain some control. Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) discovered what he was up to and tried to help the kid, which resulted in driving a wedge between Kyle and his dad.
The good news is that Cain has decided he will get treatment after all, thanks to Monty's dire situation. It's a huge moment for Cain as he finally accepts that he needs help. But as Monty comes towards the end of his life, it is hugely confronting for Cain. He retreats into himself again, continuing to distance himself from his wife. It proves to him that his own treatment may not even work. He starts to consider the future for his family without him and makes a huge request.
Cain's adoption plan for Kyle
Cain decides that he wants Moira to adopt Kyle, who has already lost his mum and could well be on course to lose his dad too. This way, he would always have Moira, just as long as she doesn't get banged up in prison again. As he prepares to share this huge idea with Kyle, Moira gets bad news – Nana Barton is injured, and she must leave town immediately.
This leaves Cain's plans up in the air, but he decides he must tell Kyle, no matter what. When Cain breaks the news to Kyle, the young lad doesn't take it well and seeks advice from Kerry (Laura Norton). But as he heads back to tell Cain what he's decided, the family are hit with devastating news – Monty is in the final stages of life, and Moira isn't there to comfort anyone. Kyle is a fragile lad, and this news could spark another fire.
