LIV Golf Races to Secure Investment as Saudi Funding Ends in 2026
LIV Golf Races for Investment as Saudi Funding Ends in 2026

Jon Rahm may be among players facing steep costs to return to traditional tours if LIV Golf fails to secure its future beyond 2026. The Saudi-funded league has officially confirmed that its financial backing from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) will end after the 2026 season, sparking a race against time to find new investment.

PIF Ends Investment After Five Years and $5bn

LIV Golf has launched a search for fresh investment after the PIF confirmed it would cease funding at the end of the 2026 season. The PIF statement substantiated rumors that it was pulling out after approximately $5 billion (£3.7 billion) of investment. The fund stated: "PIF has made the decision to fund LIV Golf only for the remainder of the 2026 season. The substantial investment required by LIV Golf over a longer term is no longer consistent with the current phase of PIF's investment strategy."

New Independent Board Formed

Hours before the PIF announcement, LIV Golf announced the creation of a new independent board, excluding Yasir al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor. The board is led by business consultants Gene Davis and Jon Zinman. Davis said: "LIV Golf has built something truly differentiated – a global league with passionate fans, world-class talent, and demonstrated commercial momentum. The executive leadership team, along with Jon and I, see a clear opportunity to help the league formalize its structure, attract and secure long-term capital, and position the business for growth."

Impact on Players

LIV Golf held calls with team captains, including Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, on Wednesday before the announcement. Some players are likely to explore returning to the PGA Tour, which is possible with penalties. For instance, Brooks Koepka is understood to have paid fines of about £63 million for reinstatement under the PGA Tour's returning member program, which applies to those who have won a major or the Players Championship since 2022.
