The Premier League has introduced a new Transfer of the Season award, with eight players nominated for the inaugural prize. The shortlist includes a mix of expensive signings, bargain deals, and even a free transfer, reflecting the diverse nature of last summer's transfer window.
Big Money Moves Overlooked
Some of the biggest transfers of the summer, such as Liverpool's £125 million signing of Alexander Isak and £100 million acquisition of Florian Wirtz, did not make the cut. Similarly, Newcastle United's expensive additions—Nick Woltemade (£65m), Anthony Elanga (£55m), and Yoane Wissa (£50m)—were also left out of the nominations.
The Eight Nominees
Manchester City lead with two nominees: Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki. Semenyo, signed from Bournemouth in January for £64 million, has scored seven goals in 17 games for City, adding to his 10 goals earlier in the season. Cherki, who joined from Lyon for £30 million in June, has become a fan favorite with his flamboyant style.
Adrien Truffert, a lesser-known name, joined Bournemouth from Rennes for around £14.4 million and played in all 38 Premier League games, effectively replacing Milos Kerkez. Granit Xhaka moved to Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen for just £13 million, playing a key role in their European qualification.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin arguably offers the best value: he joined Leeds United on a free transfer after leaving Everton and scored 14 league goals to help the team avoid relegation. Viktor Gyokeres, who cost Arsenal £63 million from Sporting, netted 14 Premier League goals and 21 in all competitions, becoming a league champion.
Chelsea's Joao Pedro, signed from Brighton for £55 million, scored 15 league goals and 20 overall. Finally, Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp for just over £18 million and quickly established himself as a reliable presence.
