UK Firms Embrace AI Boom But Bosses Lack Training

A new report has revealed that UK firms are rapidly embracing artificial intelligence, but many bosses lack the necessary training to deliver on its potential. The study, conducted by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and the British Academy of Management, found that while 80% of managers believe AI will significantly impact their organization, only 18% have received any formal training on how to manage it.

Widespread AI Adoption

The research highlights that AI adoption is accelerating across various sectors, with 56% of UK businesses now using at least one form of AI technology. This includes tools for customer service, data analysis, and process automation. However, the report warns that without proper management training, these investments may not yield the expected returns.

Training Gap

According to the survey of over 1,000 managers, 62% said their organization has not provided any guidance on how to use AI responsibly. Furthermore, 45% admitted they lack confidence in their ability to oversee AI systems. This gap is particularly concerning given the rapid pace of technological change.

Ann Francke, chief executive of the CMI, said: “AI presents a huge opportunity for UK businesses, but it’s clear that managers are being left behind. Without proper training, we risk making costly mistakes and missing out on the benefits.”

Impact on Productivity

The report also found that companies with trained managers are more likely to see productivity gains from AI. Among organizations that provided training, 72% reported improved efficiency, compared to just 34% of those that did not. This suggests that investing in management development is crucial for realizing the full potential of AI.

Recommendations

The CMI is calling on businesses to take immediate action. Recommendations include:

  • Integrating AI training into leadership development programs
  • Creating clear ethical guidelines for AI use
  • Encouraging cross-functional collaboration between tech and management teams

The government is also urged to support upskilling initiatives, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises that may lack resources.

As AI continues to reshape the workplace, the report serves as a wake-up call for UK bosses: embracing technology is only half the battle; managing it effectively is the key to success.
