RBC Capital Markets has appointed James Scaddan as a managing director in its financial sponsors group, hiring the dealmaker from Macquarie Group to strengthen its coverage of private equity clients in Europe.
New Role and Responsibilities
Scaddan will be based in London and report to David Hinds, head of financial sponsors for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at RBC. He will focus on originating and executing transactions for private equity-backed companies across the region.
Scaddan joins from Macquarie, where he spent over a decade advising on mergers and acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, and debt financings. At Macquarie, he was a senior member of the financial sponsors team, working on deals with firms such as Cinven, BC Partners, and Permira.
Strategic Move for RBC
The hire underscores RBC's ambition to expand its presence in the European financial sponsors market. The Canadian bank has been steadily building out its investment banking capabilities in Europe, particularly in sectors such as healthcare, technology, and business services.
According to a person familiar with the matter, Scaddan brings deep relationships with key private equity firms and a track record of executing complex cross-border transactions.
Industry Context
The appointment comes amid a pickup in dealmaking activity in Europe, with private equity firms sitting on record levels of dry powder. Banks are competing to win mandates from sponsors, who are increasingly looking to deploy capital in sectors such as technology, healthcare, and renewable energy.
RBC has been hiring selectively to bolster its coverage of these clients. The bank's financial sponsors group has grown significantly over the past two years, with the addition of senior bankers from rivals including Barclays and Credit Suisse.
