Selsdon Park Hotel, a historic country estate on the edge of south Croydon, is set to relaunch as a luxury resort following a £30 million restoration project approved by Croydon Council. The hotel has been vacant since 2023, when its previous operator, Birch Selsdon, went bankrupt just six months after opening.
A Historic Landmark's Revival
The original Selsdon House was built in 1809 as a private residence and converted into a hotel in 1924. Over the decades, it changed ownership multiple times. In 2023, it briefly operated as Birch Selsdon, a luxury resort and private members club, but the venture collapsed, leaving the property empty.
Now, BH Group, a luxury hotel developer, has secured planning permission to begin extensive restoration work. The group plans to make Selsdon Park the flagship property of its new staycation brand, Elysium Collection, which will also include locations in Cornwall and the Lake District.
Restoration and New Facilities
The first phase of the redevelopment will focus on restoring the building's stained glass and decorative windows, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring the long-term conservation of this listed property. Later phases will include refurbishing the hotel, gym, and tennis courts, as well as adding a new spa and wellness facility, padel courts, staff accommodation, and improved pedestrian and vehicle access.
Landscaping upgrades will also be made across the 200 acres of parkland surrounding the hotel. Notably, the former golf course will not be revived, despite its historical presence on the estate.
Timeline and Vision
BH Group aims to relaunch the hotel and its leisure facilities in summer 2027, with the spa opening later that year. The company has communicated to local residents' associations its intention to position Selsdon Park as an 'affordable' four-star hotel with 176 rooms. Unlike the previous Birch Selsdon venture, the new management has pledged that locals will be able to use the bars and restaurants without paying high membership fees.
