Battersea's Northcote Road to be pedestrianised on weekends this summer
Battersea road pedestrianised weekends this summer

A hugely popular road in Battersea is set to be pedestrianised this summer. Northcote Road, which historically served as a valley between Clapham and Wandsworth Commons, will become traffic-free on weekends during the summer months.

The pedestrianisation will begin on Saturday, July 11, with streets closed from 6am until 10pm, thanks to Wandsworth Council's new Conservative leadership. London bus routes, including the 319 and 219, will be redirected along Bolingbroke Grove.

The road is renowned for its boutique shopping, artisan cafes, and family-friendly pubs. Visitors can also enjoy strolls in nearby green spaces: Wandsworth Common to the west and Clapham Common to the east.

The pedestrianisation first occurred during the pandemic and proved so popular that it became an annual event. Its return has been welcomed by local businesses. David Shaw, who runs The Flower Stand, said the pedestrianisation “brings a whole new lease of life” to the area.

Councillor Tom Pridham, Cabinet Member for Opportunity, said: “Northcote Road is the vibrant heart of the community - a welcoming, family-friendly hub of independent businesses and a place where people come together to relax, connect, and spend time together. We are delighted to bring back the weekend pedestrianisation over the summer, supporting local businesses while once again transforming Northcote Road into a destination for both residents and visitors.”

The Northcote Road Antiques Market, located at 155A, offers grandfather clocks alongside vintage jewellery and hand-cut crystal decanters. The Northcote Road market is a fancy open-air market selling gourmet food.

Oddono's Gelati is a must-visit for sweet scoops like pistachio, hazelnut, salted caramel, and cookies and cream. For a more upmarket dining experience, The Ivy Northcote Road Brasserie serves fine dishes, or visitors can enjoy a pint and classic Sunday roast at The Bolingbroke Pub.
