The Barbican Centre has collaborated with furniture and homeware brand MADE to launch an interiors collection inspired by its iconic brutalist architecture and history. The collection, which includes armchairs, coffee tables, sofas, lighting and accessories, will be available to purchase from August 17 on both the MADE and Barbican shop websites.
Collection Inspired by 1960s Show Flats
Many of the items in the collection draw inspiration from the interiors of the Barbican estate's original show flats from the 1960s, which were designed by architect Miriam Howitt. The designs feature geometric shapes, retro colours and sculptural silhouettes, reflecting the architectural style of the building.
Highlights from the collection include a £50 curve table lamp inspired by the Barbican Hall's tubular acoustic panels, a £100 rug that reimagines a design from one of the estate's original show flats, and a £450 chair featuring pill-shaped cutout voids and subtle industrial elements. The full range also includes coffee tables, sofas, chest of drawers, shelving, posters and cushions.
Exhibition at London Design Festival
In addition to online availability, the collection will be displayed in person at the Barbican Centre's Level G Hub Space as part of the London Design Festival in September. This gives potential buyers the opportunity to see the items before making a purchase.
The collaboration marks a unique fusion of the Barbican's architectural heritage with contemporary homeware design, allowing fans of the brutalist structure to bring a piece of its aesthetic into their own homes.
