A campaign group is pushing for direct train services to London from the Wiltshire towns of Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon, and rail operators appear to be listening. The last direct train from Bristol Temple Meads to London Waterloo ran five years ago, cutting off these towns from the capital. Now, the West Wiltshire Rail User Group, supported by local councillors and MPs, has launched a petition that has prompted South Western Railway (SWR) to open a consultation on potential timetable changes for 2027.
What campaigners want
Transport campaigner Graham Ellis explained that reconnecting two existing services could restore links to Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, and smaller stations like Keynsham and Melksham. “There is a train which runs from Bristol to Salisbury and we’re simply saying connect that up with the train from Salisbury to London,” he told the BBC. Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for highways, Martin Smith, said he “would strongly welcome” a direct service to London. South West Wiltshire MP Dr Andrew Murrison added: “Trowbridge needs to attract high quality employers and compete with areas that this government is more interested in.”
Why visit Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon
Restoring the direct line could boost tourism from London. Trowbridge boasts a high number of listed buildings and a town centre focused on independent shops and cafes. Bradford-on-Avon, often described as “idyllic” and “gorgeous” on social media, features honey-coloured Cotswold stone architecture, the Kennet & Avon Canal, and attractions like the Bridge Tea Rooms and the medieval Tithe Barn. The Catholic Church alone is a picturesque landmark. The town is just 11 minutes by train from Bath, offering a quieter alternative.
A SWR spokesperson said every suggestion from the consultation “will be carefully reviewed as we balance enhancing connectivity and meeting demand,” adding that responses will be provided through the formal process at the appropriate time.
