Search and Recovery Operation
According to an official statement, Moroccan search teams discovered the remains on Saturday in the water, less than one mile (1.6 kilometers) from the location where the soldier was last seen. 1st Lt Key served as a platoon leader in an artillery unit. The army confirmed that another soldier remains missing, and search operations are ongoing.
African Lion Exercise
The two soldiers were participating in African Lion, the largest joint military exercise conducted by the US Africa Command (Africom). This annual exercise involves US forces, NATO allies, and partner nations from across Africa. The main portion of the exercise is held in Morocco and includes approximately 5,000 personnel from more than 40 countries.
The incident has prompted an extensive search and recovery effort, with Moroccan authorities playing a key role. The US Army expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by Moroccan partners and reaffirmed its commitment to locating the second missing soldier.
African Lion focuses on enhancing interoperability and readiness among participating forces, covering various training scenarios including ground operations, air support, and maritime security. The exercise is a cornerstone of US military engagement in Africa, aimed at strengthening partnerships and promoting stability in the region.
