US Renames Iran War as Project Freedom to Unblock Strait

The United States has announced a new military operation in the Middle East, rebranding its intervention as Project Freedom, with the stated goal of unblocking the Strait of Hormuz. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that the operation aims to rescue 23,000 individuals from 87 different countries who are currently trapped in the Gulf. Rubio claimed these people had been 'left for dead in the Persian Gulf by the Iranian regime' and emphasized that the US was responding to requests from multiple nations to restore freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway.

Rubio's Justification for Project Freedom

Speaking to reporters, Rubio stated that many nations had asked the United States to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently under a US blockade. 'Under this president, under President Trump, the United States will help our friends. We’re going to stand up to rogue regimes like the one in Tehran, and we’re going to be unashamed to use our power and our abilities to project military power in the service of our national interest, above all else,' he declared. However, Rubio's comments about America's 'preferences' in the Middle East have raised eyebrows, as he admitted that the end goal is to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to its pre-war state. 'Our preference is for the Strait to be open, to the way it’s supposed to be open. Back to the way it was. Anyone can use it, no mines in the water, nobody paying tolls. That’s what we have to get back to, and that’s the goal here,' he said.

Trump Pauses Rescue Efforts for Iran Talks

Rubio's remarks coincide with President Donald Trump's announcement that the United States will temporarily pause efforts to guide stranded vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz to facilitate a deal with Iran. American forces had previously attempted to reopen the strait, but Trump confirmed that a US blockade of Iranian ports would remain in place during negotiations. In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump stated he was pausing the initiative to guide ships out of the waterway for a limited time to allow space for finalizing a settlement with Iran to end the war. Rubio continued to insist that a ceasefire in the region is holding after the initial US military operation against Iran concluded. During a White House press briefing on Tuesday, Rubio stressed that for peace to be achieved, Iran must agree to the president's demands regarding its nuclear program and consent to reopen the Strait.

White House Criticizes Allies' Response

The White House has been deeply critical of the response from the UK and other allies to the Gulf crisis, arguing that other nations need the strait more than the US. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recently dismissed efforts led by Britain and France to ensure the future security of the strait as 'silly' and suggested they should have 'less fancy conferences in Europe and get in a boat.' The sea route, a major supply line for oil and gas, had been open prior to the US and Israel launching strikes against Iran. In retaliation, Tehran effectively closed the shipping lane and began charging hefty tolls for transit, sparking a global energy crisis that has driven prices sharply higher. This prompted the US to impose its own blockade of Iranian ports, leading to a standoff.
