US President Donald Trump on Friday blamed Iran for a drone strike on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a 'foolish violation' of the ceasefire agreement with the United States. The incident occurred amid fragile negotiations to finalize a permanent end to the war between the US and Iran.
Details of the Attack
According to Trump's social media post, one drone damaged the upper deck of the ship, but the vessel was able to proceed without further incident. The US president also stated that American forces shot down three other drones targeting the ship. However, Trump did not identify the name of the ship or the exact time of the strike.
On Thursday, the British military reported that a vessel was hit by a projectile off the coast of Oman. The attack underscores ongoing tensions in the region, even as the US and Iran work toward a permanent peace deal under an interim agreement reached last week.
Regional Context and Tensions
The drone strike comes at a delicate time for US-Iran relations. Iran has increasingly challenged US control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments. The interim deal, which gives both sides 60 days to negotiate final terms, includes discussions on ensuring safe passage through the strait and addressing Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Earlier on Friday, a missile warning in the United Arab Emirates caused by a technical glitch further highlighted regional tensions. The mobile phone alert startled many across Dubai, marking the first such alert since the interim ceasefire. The brief text alert from the UAE's interior ministry was also the first of its kind in Dubai during the Iran war, though similar alerts have been issued in the region since the conflict began on 28 February.
Diplomatic Efforts
Shortly after the alert, the UAE foreign minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, held a telephone call with Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi. According to a statement, Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the UAE's commitment to the interim deal between Iran and the US. 'Serious diplomacy and responsible dialogue are the optimal path for addressing all regional and international crises,' he said.
The US and Iran continue to negotiate the terms of the interim peace deal, which includes provisions for maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and the future of Iran's nuclear program. The 60-day negotiation period aims to resolve these critical issues and prevent further escalation.
