Spirit Airlines Shutdown: How Stranded Travelers Can Get Home and Refunds
Spirit Airlines Shutdown: How to Get Home and Refunds

The collapse of Spirit Airlines has left many travelers scrambling for alternatives. If you are among those affected, here is a comprehensive guide on how to secure a flight home and recover your money.

Rescue Fares from Competing Airlines

Several airlines that previously competed with Spirit are offering reduced fares to assist stranded passengers. Carriers such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Frontier Airlines, and Southwest Airlines have capped or lowered ticket prices for those needing to rebook. These offers are time-sensitive and prioritize travelers left without a flight.

For instance, Southwest's deal is available only at airport ticket counters through Wednesday, 6 May, as confirmed by Airlines for America and the US Department of Transportation. United allows online bookings for up to two weeks. American, Allegiant, Frontier, and Delta have advertised reduced fares on routes previously served by Spirit. Many airlines provide maps showing overlapping routes to help travelers find comparable flights.

“Spirit Airlines played an important role in expanding access to affordable travel and bringing more low fares to more people,” said Bobby Schroeter, Frontier's chief commercial officer. “We recognize this is a difficult time for their customers and team members.”

Getting Your Money Back

Spirit has stated it will automatically process refunds for flights booked with credit or debit cards. Travelers who booked through third-party agencies should contact those agents for refunds. Those who used vouchers, credits, or points must await the bankruptcy process. The Department of Transportation recommends contacting your credit card company to request a chargeback under the Fair Credit Billing Act for services not rendered. If you have travel insurance or it is included in your credit card benefits, check if it covers insolvency or service cessation.

Expanding Capacity and Perks

American and United are adjusting their fleets to accommodate more stranded passengers. American is considering using larger aircraft, while United may add flights on overlapping routes. “We are reviewing opportunities to add additional capacity, including utilizing larger aircraft on critical routes – to support as many affected passengers as possible,” American stated. Southwest is offering a status match, honoring Spirit's silver and gold members with its A-list program. Hertz is advertising one-way rentals with up to 25% off for those who find driving faster.

Assistance for Employees

Spirit crew members stranded on duty can access airline travel benefits, including spare jump seats on most major carriers. American has pledged to provide transportation for displaced Spirit team members. The Department of Transportation notes that other airlines are offering preferential interviews for former Spirit pilots, flight attendants, and employees. American will host recruiting events for these individuals.
