A major search operation is underway for an 11-year-old boy who disappeared after entering the River Don in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. Emergency crews were called to Ferry Boat Lane at around 8 p.m. on May 30, 2026, following reports that the boy had entered the water.
Multi-Agency Search Effort
The search involves the National Police Air Service, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Specialist teams, including an underwater search unit and police helicopter with drones, are coordinating efforts. Inspector Neil Pryce of the response team stated: "We know, from witnesses and items left on the riverbank, where the boy entered the water. Utilizing specialist knowledge and skills, a coordinated multi-agency operation is underway, and we are doing everything we can to find this young man."
Public Appeal for Safety and Dignity
The boy's family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers. Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area and refrain from spectating or filming the search to ensure safety and respect for the family. "This is a tragic incident, and we understand that members of the public want to do all they can to help, but we must ask that, for everyone's safety, only those involved in our operation enter the River Don," Inspector Pryce added.
This incident comes amid a heatwave that has seen 15 drownings across the country. On May 29, a 19-year-old man died after entering Balderton Lake in Nottinghamshire. The search for the missing boy continues.
