The Red Arrows have been forced to cancel appearances at several major UK events after their transatlantic return journey was halted by adverse weather, leaving the team stranded in Canada. The RAF aerobatics team had been touring the United States as part of Operation Eagle Hawk, a series of displays commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. However, a prolonged spell of poor weather has prevented their planned multi-stop flight back to the UK, grounding the team after the first leg.
Weather halts return journey
The pilots were scheduled to fly from the US to eastern Canada, then onward to Greenland and Iceland before finally returning home. But the forecasted conditions have left them unable to proceed beyond Canada. The single-engined Hawk aircraft cannot refuel midair, making the journey reliant on a series of stops. With weather hampering the route, the team has had to postpone their return indefinitely.
As a result, the Red Arrows will not perform at Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week. All three events will still go ahead as planned, but without the iconic display team. Organisers and local communities have been informed of the cancellations, which were confirmed in a statement from the RAF.
Safety is the priority
Wing Commander Sasha Nash, officer commanding the Red Arrows, expressed regret over the situation: “We are very sorry the Red Arrows cannot participate at these events and we are grateful to organisers and communities for their understanding. Every effort is being made to ensure the Red Arrows can recommence the busy display season as soon as possible. However, safety is the only factor that will determine the timing of the team’s return from Canada.”
The team has also rearranged scheduled engineering work on the Hawk aircraft to take place in Canada rather than the UK, ensuring that the time spent stranded is used productively. This adjustment is intended to make the return to the planned 2026 display programme as efficient as possible once the weather clears.
Next scheduled appearance
Spectators can next expect to see the Red Arrows at Cromer Carnival and Air Display on August 19, provided the team is able to return by then. Following that, the pilots are due to travel to Sweden to mark the 100th anniversary of the Swedish Air Force in Linköping. However, these plans remain subject to change depending on the weather and the team’s ability to safely complete the journey home.
