A tragic plane crash occurred in the heart of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, when a small aircraft slammed into a building, resulting in two fatalities and three serious injuries. The incident took place on May 4, 2026, in the bustling Silveira district of the country's sixth-largest city, home to approximately 2.4 million residents.
Details of the Crash
The aircraft, a small jet carrying five people, took off from Pampulha Airport at 12:16 PM local time. Shortly after departure, the pilot reported to the control tower that he was experiencing difficulties during takeoff. Video footage captured the plane circling the area before it collided with a low-rise building, striking between the third and fourth floors in the stairwell.
Lieutenant Raul of the Fire Department explained the impact location: 'It hit between the third and fourth floors, in the stairwell. If it had hit the sides, it could have struck some residences; those apartments were occupied. What we saw was the structure of the aircraft projected inside the stairwell, without hitting any other apartments.'
The pilot and one passenger died in the crash, while the three remaining passengers sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Remarkably, no injuries were reported among the building's occupants.
Eyewitness Accounts
Avani Soares, a resident of the building, described the terrifying moment: 'Everything went dark, a lot of debris fell, and I thought, 'The world has ended.' On the other floor, there were people screaming for help. I didn't know what to do.' She noted a strong smell of fuel as she fled the building with only her phone and glasses.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the crash. The Centre for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA), under the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), will examine the incident. Additionally, the Civil Police of Minas Gerais (PCMG) has opened its own inquiry to determine the cause of the tragedy.
This devastating event has shaken the local community, with many expressing shock and grief over the loss of life and the suddenness of the accident.
