Central London is bracing for significant disruption this Saturday as tens of thousands of protesters take to the streets, leading to widespread road closures. The demonstrations include a far-right march led by Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, under the banner 'Unite the Kingdom', alongside a separate protest marking Nakba Day, also known as the 'Palestinian Catastrophe'. Counter-protesters from Stand Up To Racism will join the latter group.
Protest Details and Expected Numbers
Authorities anticipate up to 80,000 participants for the Unite the Kingdom protest, while an additional 30,000 are expected for the Nakba Day march. The two events coincide with the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, where Chelsea faces Manchester City, drawing tens of thousands of football fans to the area.
Massive Police Operation
The Metropolitan Police is mounting one of its largest public order operations, deploying 4,000 officers. Resources include helicopters, drones, armed police, mounted units, and dog teams. For the first time during a public order operation, live facial recognition cameras will be used, though not on the march routes.
Designated Routes and Rallies
To prevent clashes, the two demonstrations have been assigned separate routes. The Unite the Kingdom protest will assemble on Kingsway, then proceed via Aldwych and The Strand to Whitehall, with a rally in Parliament Square. The Nakba Day protest will gather on Exhibition Road in Kensington, moving along Brompton Road to Waterloo Place, then to Piccadilly for its rally.
Impact on Traffic and Public
Road closures will be in effect across central London, affecting major thoroughfares. Commuters and visitors are advised to avoid the areas or use alternative transport. Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman stated: 'Saturday has the potential to be one of the busiest days for policing in London in recent years. We’ll be policing two significant and potentially challenging protests in the centre of the city as well as the FA Cup Final which takes place at Wembley on the same day.'
Authorities urge the public to plan ahead and stay informed via official channels. The Metropolitan Police will provide real-time updates on road closures and public transport disruptions.
