The Royal Navy warship HMS Dragon has been dispatched to the Middle East to prepare for a potential mission in the Strait of Hormuz, where it will join an international coalition to safeguard commercial shipping. The Type 45 destroyer will 'pre-position' in the region, ready to participate in the UK and French-led initiative once hostilities between Iran and US-Israeli forces cease, the Ministry of Defence confirmed.
Current Situation in the Strait
Sporadic fighting continues despite a fragile ceasefire, with Iran accused of launching airstrikes at an oil facility in the UAE last week. The proposed mission, championed by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to assemble a coalition of nations to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait, a critical artery for global oil, gas, and goods.
US Military Actions
On Friday, the US military struck two Iranian tankers attempting to breach the blockade imposed on Iranian ports by former President Donald Trump. Explosions were reported in the Iranian port cities of Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas near the Strait on Thursday. The US confirmed it targeted Iranian military facilities, including missile and drone launch sites, but insisted the strikes were in 'self-defence.'
UK Position and Planning
A Ministry of Defence spokesman stated: 'We can confirm that HMS Dragon will deploy to the Middle East to pre-position ahead of any future multinational mission to protect international shipping when conditions allow them to transit the Strait of Hormuz. The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure that the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the strait, when conditions allow.' HMS Dragon had previously been stationed in the eastern Mediterranean, where it was on standby to defend British bases on Cyprus.
Broader Context
The deployment comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with the Strait of Hormuz being a key chokepoint for global energy supplies. The UK and France have been leading diplomatic efforts to establish a multinational security framework. While a ceasefire between Iran and US-Israeli forces remains shaky, the pre-positioning of HMS Dragon signals readiness to act once a more stable environment permits.
