Heathrow Airport has reported a 5.3% decline in passenger numbers for April, attributing the drop to the ongoing war in the Middle East. The West London hub recorded 6.7 million passengers passing through its four terminals last month, compared to 7.1 million during the same period in 2025.
Impact of Middle East Conflict on Travel
The reduction reflects "the ongoing impact of the Middle East conflict on some markets and short-term adjustments to travel plans," the airport stated in a press release. The conflict has also driven up jet fuel costs, leading to higher flight prices and reduced demand on certain routes.
Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye commented: "We know passengers want certainty when planning their hard-earned summer holidays, so we are supporting Government and airlines as they work through their plans to get passengers on their journeys." He added: "While we have seen some short-term disruption linked to the Middle East conflict, demand for travel remains strong with current fuel supplies stable."
Busiest Month of 2026 So Far
Despite the decline, April was still Heathrow's busiest month this year, underlining the strength of a global hub airport that can adapt quickly in times of uncertainty. The airport noted that transfer passenger numbers in April were 10% higher than the same month last year, attributed to an increase in passengers flying into Heathrow and then boarding flights to Asia and Oceania. Middle Eastern airports are a major hub for these journeys, but many passengers are avoiding the region due to the conflict.
Heathrow said it will update its 2026 passenger forecast in June "in light of the Middle East conflict." The airport insisted that "underlying demand remains resilient" despite the current challenges.
The cost of jet fuel has seen a sharp rise, impacting airline operating costs and ticket prices. This has contributed to the decline in passenger numbers as travelers adjust their plans. The situation remains fluid, and Heathrow is working closely with government and airline partners to ensure smooth operations during the upcoming summer season.
