God of War Laufey, the next entry in the acclaimed action-adventure series, will launch on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, Sony announced at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. The game stars Kratos' second wife, Faye (also known as Laufey), as the main playable character, with Kratos appearing in multiple cameo roles.
Release Date and Platform Details
Santa Monica Studio confirmed the release date during a Comic-Con panel, emphasizing that the game is a mainline entry rather than a spin-off. The story directly follows the events of God of War Ragnarök and takes place in the 'afterlife of the gods,' a concept hinted at in the previous title. In line with Sony's new policy on PC games, Laufey will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 at launch, with no other formats announced. A physical disc version will be available, as Sony plans to stop releasing games on disc after 2028. This makes Laufey one of the last first-party titles to receive a physical release.
Gameplay and Setting
Laufey is described as a more openly fantastical game than its predecessors, featuring gods and monsters from multiple mythologies. The next game is likely to release in mid-to-late 2031, potentially as a PlayStation 6 title, given the roughly four-year gap between previous entries. Santa Monica Studio employs around 250 staff, and it remains unclear if they have the capacity to develop two major titles simultaneously.
