A large fire has broken out in central Nottingham, with social media users reporting hearing an explosion. Pictures from the scene show thick black smoke emerging from a building. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said there was an ongoing incident at a commercial building on Curzon Street. The street runs alongside student accommodation, near the city’s Victoria shopping centre.
Evacuations and Emergency Response
Evacuations from neighbouring buildings are now taking place, Nottinghamshire Police said. A spokesperson for the fire service said a call had been received at 11:23 am, and 10 pumps were attending the incident. In a statement posted on social media, the police said the fire was in a derelict building.
Police Statement
‘Police and fire crews are currently at the scene, and a number of cordons will be placed around Huntingdon Street and Curzon Street. The cause of the fire is not yet known. There are no reports of any injuries. As a precaution, we are looking at evacuating a number of properties on the street.’
