A father of two has tragically died after being attacked by a shark while spearfishing with friends off the coast of Perth, Western Australia. The incident occurred on Saturday morning near Horseshoe Reef, close to Rottnest Island.
Details of the attack
Steven Mattaboni, 38, was in the water when a shark bit his lower leg, causing catastrophic injuries. His friends managed to pull him back onto their boat and rushed him to shore, performing CPR on the way. Despite the efforts of police and paramedics who met them at the shore, Mattaboni could not be saved.
Family tribute
Mattaboni's wife, Shirene, paid an emotional tribute to her husband, describing him as a devoted father and a man who lived for the ocean. 'Steven was a devoted father to our two beautiful daughters — one who turns three next month and our four-month-old baby,' she said. 'An avid fisherman and spearfisherman, who lived and breathed the ocean, he was always in tune with the sea. He was fiercely loyal, endlessly generous, and the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back.'
She added: 'The world has lost a truly one-of-a-kind gentleman, and our daughters have lost an incredible father far too soon. We extend our deepest, most sincere gratitude to the emergency services and first responders who worked so tirelessly to save him.'
Official response
Western Australia Police Minister Reece Whitby acknowledged the efforts of Mattaboni's friends and expressed condolences. 'I want to acknowledge the diver's friends who played a critical role in doing the best they could to bring him back to shore,' he said. 'My heart and thoughts go out to the man's family, friends and loved ones. He loved the ocean and loved diving, and it is just incredibly tragic.'
The incident has shocked the local community, with many expressing their sorrow and support for the family. Shark attacks are rare in the area, but authorities remind the public to remain vigilant when in the water.
