The family of Shaun Burton, the 60-year-old train driver who died in the Bedford rail crash, have spoken of their devastation following the incident on Friday.
Family releases statement and photo
In a statement released through British Transport Police, Mr Burton's family said: 'We are devastated by his loss. Our thoughts are also with those affected by this incident.' They also released a photograph of him and requested privacy as they begin to come to terms with the tragedy.
Only fatality in crash that injured around 100
Mr Burton was the only person killed in the crash, which left around 100 passengers injured. Nine people remain in critical condition, making it the worst British train crash in two decades. The collision caused significant disruption expected to last for days.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: 'Shaun's family are also releasing this picture of him and would now like to ask for their privacy to be respected as they begin to come to terms with this devastating loss. Our thoughts continue to be with them and his colleagues at East Midlands Railway.'
Ongoing investigation and disruption
The cause of the crash is under investigation. East Midlands Railway, Mr Burton's employer, has expressed condolences and is cooperating with authorities. Passengers are advised to check for travel updates as services remain affected.
