Ashley Blair experienced a truly memorable flight when she gave birth to her daughter, Brielle Renee, on a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Portland on Friday night. The unexpected delivery occurred just before the plane landed, turning a routine journey into a remarkable event.
Emergency in the Sky
Emergency medical technicians Tina Fritz and Caarin Powell, who were returning from a vacation in the Dominican Republic, responded to two medical emergencies on the flight. The first involved another passenger, but soon after, flight crew called for assistance for Blair, who had gone into labor.
The EMTs quickly assessed the situation and took action. They rearranged seats to give Blair more space and borrowed blankets from fellow passengers. Powell even used her own shoelace as a tourniquet to start an IV.
With just three pushes, the baby was born. Fritz described the newborn as 'gorgeous' and said she 'pinked up right away,' indicating good health. 'Mom was a rock star,' she added.
A Smooth Landing
The plane landed shortly after the birth. Brielle Renee, weighing 5.5 pounds, arrived two weeks before her due date. Blair was traveling to Oregon to be with her mother for the birth.
Portland Airport Fire and Rescue confirmed the in-air birth and stated that emergency responders were waiting for the mother and baby. 'They found everyone in stable condition when the aircraft landed shortly before its regularly scheduled arrival time of approximately 10pm,' said spokesperson Molly Prescott. Blair and the baby were taken to a local hospital for observation.
Delta Air Lines expressed their well-wishes in a statement, thanking the crew and medical volunteers. 'The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority,' the company said.
